For Shame: Movies on DVD & Blu-ray April 17th
Alyssa’s Pick of the Week: Shame (Blu-ray)
Drama starring Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, and James Badge Dale. In New York City, Brandon has a carefully cultivated life that allows him to indulge in his sex addiction, but his shaky existence is rocked by the arrival of his sister. – Rated NC-17
I have yet to see this much-buzzed about movie starring a very sexy (and very nude) Michael Fassbender. His looks aside this man is a mega-talent. Carey Mulligan is also insanely likable so the movie has a good onscreen duo. However, the subject matter is a little off-putting. It’s an NC-17 rated movie that features sex, sex, and sex. It’s not for the faint of heart, nor the prudish. I’ve heard nothing but praise for this movie and I like to think it deals with risqué subject matter with respect rather than exploitation. America has a backwards approach to what we deem “inappropriate” on-screen. Sex is treated as a very taboo topic, but it is a natural part of life that shouldn’t make people as uncomfortable as it makes them. Fassbender is brave for taking on this role, but thus far in his career, he hasn’t necessarily been shy or put off by a challenge. That’s what makes him a force to be reckoned with.
Born to be Wild
Documentary starring Birute Galdikas, Daphne Sheldrick, and Morgan Freeman. An inspired story of love, dedication, and the remarkable bond between humans and animals through the documentation of orphaned orangutans and elephants. – Rated G
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Action/Adventure starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, and Simon Pegg. The IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization’s name. – Rated PG-13
The Divide (Blu-ray)
Suspense/Thriller starring Lauren German, Michael Biehn, and Milo Ventimiglia. Survivors of a nuclear attack are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic. – Rated R
