Newest Zombie Horror
When most people think of zombie movies, they picture bad special effects, hokey story lines, and ridiculous violence. Most of the time, they are right to picture those things. I Am Legend is different though. First of all, it has Will Smith in the starring role as Robert Neville. This is a big name actor, not the usual B-type cast of most zombie flicks. That should say something right away. This isn’t another low budget cheap thrill movie. This is a serious movie that is meant to scare, a true horror movie.

Robert Neville is the last man on earth… as far as he knows. A man made virus has infected everyone except Robert, as he is somehow immune. He lives in New York, searching for a way to stop the virus. He doesn’t have much time though, as the virus has turned everyone else into mutants, watching his every move. This is an interesting take on a zombie movie. It’s not just shoot ‘em up survival. It involves really trying to cure something that threatens to destroy mankind. It is one man’s great struggle.

Will Smith will be playing this one man, and predictably will do a good job. He has come a long way as an actor, and fans have come to expect much of him and the movies he is in. I think this is well deserved and for the most part, Smith lives up to the hype. I expect him to do the same in this film, giving depth to Robert Neville and making the audience see and feel what he is going through. Not just fighting monsters, but also struggling to survive and coming to grips with the realization that he might be the only human left on the planet.

He has to walk through the empty streets of New York City. He has to see all the empty cars, the empty buildings. Yeah, he can hit golf balls from the top of buildings, drive fast cars, but it is all alone. He is alone. This is an opportunity for Smith to once again prove his acting ability. This is a situation that would mess with anybody’s mind, and Smith has the ability to show this.

Of course, there probably will be some great fighting scenes with the monsters. The movie should haunt the viewer; make them cringe in their seats. That is what a good horror movie should do. I expect this movie to do the same while also having a good story line and good acting. Make a point of going to see this above average thriller in December.
