Like all the best sci-fi movies, Galaxy Quest has its very own tag line, “Never give up, never surrender!” Being shouted in an encouraging matter by Home Improvement’s one and only, Tim Allen makes the catch phrase that much more inspiring. It also makes it worthy of repeating in real life’s sticky situations, as I have recently taken on this phrase when reality gets me down… though it has powerful effects, so use it wisely.
Captain Nesmith, played by Tim Allen, who is adored by the geek nation as their leader, plays the captain of the protector and leads his fellow cast that include Sigourney Weaver (Gwen Demarco), Alan Rickman (Alexander Dane), Tony Shalhoub (Fred Kwan) in a TV series which aired 20 years prior (one that portrays a similar version of Star Trek). As the seemingly dead-end show comes to a halt captain Nesmith is confronted by what appears to be a group of intergalactic beings in need of his leadership. Believing that the TV show is “historical documents”, the aliens hope that Nesmith can save their race from Sarris (the Dr.Evil of the movie) and his dominions. Seeing this as another gig, Nesmith agrees and the aliens beam him up into their spaceship.
After his trip aboard the spaceship he returns to earth to recruit his fellow cast members and lead them on a journey through the galaxy jungle to save the Thermian race. Upon their arrival to the Thermian’s home planet they are greeted with hand pounds and bundles of hope. The crew is then led to a real life version of their famous ship, the Protector, and begin their kung-fu space battle to defeat Sarris.
The space cowboys then find themselves in need of another source of energy if they wish to continue the journey. Their only option is to get this energy from a nearby planet. Upon arrival they run into trouble with some delectable little aliens that turn out to be more than meets the eye. In a cheddar-cheesy attempt at bravery, Nesmith stays behind to ward of the alien pursuers. Will the crew overcomes all obstacles and saves the day? Hmm…
Tim Allen, known for his star role in Home Improvement and the Santa Claus movies, delivers a delightfully tacky performance in Galaxy Quest. As for Sigourney Weaver, her boobilicious debut as Gwen Demarco provides the male viewing audience with some very appealing imagery. While Alan Rickman takes a break from his role as professor Snape in Harry Potter to give the audience a complaint riddled performance. Though he comes equipped with crazy character makeup in both the Harry Potter series and Galaxy Quest, he finds himself in the midst of two very diverse villain smack downs. He trades his wands and gorgeous sleek long locks in Harry Potter for some space tomfoolery in Galaxy Quest… and I eat it up like Harry’s chocolate frogs! The final main role goes to actor Tony Shalhoub, also known as Monk, who contributes another one of his dry humor roles… hilarious as ever.
The special features give a more in depth analysis of the making of the movie and provide a little humor as Sigourney Weaver lays down a sick beat in a clever little rap(true story). Also included in the new Deluxe Edition special features are deleted scenes, a tid bit on alien school: creating the Thermian Race and a new theatrical trailer. Check it out… its worth a lazy Sunday afternoon. Never give up! Never surrender!
