Apparently we have become so desensitized by molting monsters, decrepit zombies, seductive vampires, stalking dolls and psychos that it is time for something new to scare us. Let’s try on a wig. Unfortunately, it imposes little fear unless you suffer from trichophobia and in The Wig most of the drama and damage spewed throughout the film surges from sisterly bitterness and bad luck.
This horror movie had so much going on in this family that it quickly drained credibility. One of the sisters, Jihyun, was in a car accident that left her without a voice box and the other sister, Soo-hyun, is a cancer patient struggling with treatment.
One goes after the other’s ex, one is victimized and the other is a victim releasing her anger and frustration. That is basically the foundation of this movie and it goes back and forth and makes me wonder why one doesn’t kick the other out of her house.
Oh, yeah! I almost forgot about the spirit haunting the wig. When I use the term “haunted” I mean strands of hair eerily blow around and the wig sluggishly slides along from place to place. It is actually haunted by someone who committed suicide who was obsessed with whom else but the guy the sisters are fighting over. This is some unlikely catfight. When you get the gist of the story, you can’t help but laugh at how little the wig actually does.
OK. I’ll give it some credit. The wig regenerates the wearer’s youth and health but a scene in the movie made me question if Soo-hyun hadn’t had these kinds of intentions before. Jerry Springer would love to have these girls on his show.
What I really love about horror films is that they usually pay a lot of attention to visual detail. The Wig gives decent depth to the characters except for the guy everyone is fighting for and gives even greater care for the picture. The graphics were fairly simple and evenly distributed but the colors and angles are what kept my attention span in check. If that is all the strength this movie has, I would not advise a sequel. It might involve a haunted mustache!
