Box Office Report: ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’ Takes Number One Spot
The war at the box office this weekend was between circus animals and alien demons. And the circus animals won.
The animals of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted took the top spot at the box office this weekend, earning $60.4 million. It attracted families all over as it reunited the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer as the zoo animals continue their travels by joining a circus.
It outdid the $47.2 million debut of the 2005 original, though it came in behind the $63.1 million opening of the first sequel, 2008′s Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. It also received better reviews than the first two installments.
Madagascar 3 also took in $75.5 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $135.9 million.
As for the alien demons of Prometheus, they took second with $50 million. It features Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in an offshoot of director’s Scott’s 1979 sci-fi horror tale Alien.
The movie added $39.2 million overseas, bringing its international total to $91.5 million and its worldwide take to $141.5 million since it debuted in some markets a week earlier.
Last weekend’s holder of the top spot, Snow White and the Huntsman, fell to third place earning $23 million, making its domestic total $98.5 million.
In fourth was Men in Black 3 with $13.5 million, making its domestic total $135.5 million. Rounding out the top five is The Avengers earning $10.8 million, with a domestic total of $571.9 million.
