Box Office Report: ‘Taken 2′ Takes Number One Spot

This weekend at the box office, Taken 2, starring Liam Neeson, took number one earning $50 million, and another $55 million overseas, with a worldwide total of $117 million. The sequel earned $25 million more than the original, which hit theaters in 2008. Taken went on to become a $145 million smash.

In the film, Neeson stars as Bryan Mills, a retired CIA agent. Maggie Grace returns as Bryan’s daughter Kim and X-Men‘s Famke Janssen plays Lenore, Bryan’s ex-wife.

Last weekends top spot holder, Adam Sandler’s animated hit Hotel Transylvania, fell to the number two spot, earning $26.3 million. The Sony release raised its domestic total to $76 million, and it has taken in $29.3 million overseas for a worldwide haul of $105.3 million.

Pitch Perfect expanded nationwide release after a limited debut a week earlier, resulting it moving up to third place, earning $14.7 million.

Looper, starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, fell to fourth place, earning $12.2 million. Its domestic total is $40.3 million.

Rounding out the top five is Tim Burton’s animated film Frankenweenie, which earned $11.5 million. The Disney release is an update of Burton’s 1984 live-action short film, about a boy who brings his dead dog back to life.
