This Valentine’s Day weekend, love conquered all. Okay… maybe it was the promise of seeing Channing Tatum shirtless, but regardless, The Vow was number one this weekend at the box office, earning $41.7 million. Starring alongside Tatum is the beautiful Rachel McAdams. Women accounted for 72 percent of the audience for the film, whose receipts in just its first two days exceeded the movie’s $30 million production budget. It added $9.7 million in 20 overseas markets to bring its worldwide total to $51.4 million. Will you be seeing The Vow Tuesday on Valentine’s Day? I will!
Debuting in second was the action film starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington, Safe House, which earned $39.3 million. Apparently, viewers enjoyed seeing Reynolds outside of his typical rom-com roles. It took in $10.2 million from 25 overseas territories to lift its worldwide total to $49.5 million.
In number three was Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, starring Josh Hutcherson and Dwayne Johnson, which earned $27.6 million and is a sequel to the 2008 film Journey to the Center of the Earth.
At number four, earning $23 million was Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, which premiered in 3-D for the first time. That raises the lifetime domestic total for Phantom Menace to $454.1 million, which can buy a whole lot of lightsabers…
Last weekends number one film fell to number five, with Chronicle earning $12.3 million.
