Liam Neeson is no stranger to kicking some major butt in his films, but in his latest film, The Grey, he had to fight off some pretty gnarly looking wolves. Despite a variety of other films debuting this weekend, it took the number one spot earning $20 million. Expectations were around the $14 million range and the reviews were positive as well.
Last weekends winner, Underworld Awakening, slipped to second earning $12.5 million. That’s a 51% drop from last week’s business, which is not unusual for a big action blockbuster. Its total to date comes to $45.1 million.
Opening in third place was One For The Money, which earned $11.8 million, which is in the range pundits had predicted. Despite being based on a popular series of Janet Evanovich crime novels, expectations were modest, since the movie featured Katherine Heigl… who hasn’t exactly been a big box office draw (Should have stayed on Grey’s Anatomy girl!). The film was also featured on the coupon website Groupon, discounting tickets to $6.
Red Tails also last about half of last weekends earnings, with about $10.4 million at fourth place. George Lucas’s World War II aerial adventure has very strong word-of-mouth, so it could show some staying presence amid the current surplus of action movies. So far, it’s earned $33.8 million.
And debuting at number five, Man on a Ledge earning $8.3 million. Sam Worthington isn’t a big box office draw, despite his role in the major film Avatar. It also was featured on a coupon website, this time The Living Social, for $6.
