Tanya Wexler’s latest film, Hysteria, is a British romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator in Victorian England that will unspool at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. It stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett, Ashley Jensen, Sheridan Smith, Gemma Jones, Felicity Jones and Anna Chancellor.
The official synopsis reads: Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy star in this cheeky romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator. Victorian London is brought to life in vivid colour as a young doctor (Dancy) struggles to establish himself while confronting the gutsy daughter of his boss (Gyllenhaal). Rupert Everett and Felicity Jones play supporting roles.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term hysteria (which is probably most of you) it became popular in the 19th century. Hysteria came to be defined as a more generalized sexual dysfunction that could be treated by massaging the patient’s genitalia by the physician and, later, by vibrators or water sprays to cause orgasm.
