Heartwarming, tear-jerker, Steel Magnolias written by Robert Harling has been given a serious makeover by Lifetime and will debut on their network this fall.
Lifetime has already started to preview its trailer on their website. In this version, the movie will still take place in the southern town Chinquapin of Louisiana, but the stars will be African Americans: Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Queen Latifah as M’Lynn, Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Adepero Oduye as Annelle, and Phylicia’s real life daughter, Condola Rashad as Shelby.
The movie (originally a play) appeared in 1989, with Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis playing those roles.
Woodard claims that the movie and its characters are “classic.” She goes on to exclaim happily “It’s not like we’re turning it into Big Momma’s House!
