Academy Award, Golden Globe and multiple Grammy Award-winning singer songwriter Annie Lennox has written and recorded an original song entitled “Requiem For A Private War,” for the film A Private War, based on the life of legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin, it was announced today by David Dinerstein, President of Aviron Pictures. The song is produced by Lennox and H. Scott Salinas, the film’s composer. The original soundtrack album will be released by Music.Film Recordings to coincide with the theatrical release of the film on November 2, 2018.
In A Private War, Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike portrays American journalist Marie Colvin, who wrote for The Sunday Times in London and is one of the most celebrated war correspondents of our time. Colvin is an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, driven to the frontlines of conflicts across the globe to give voice to the voiceless, while constantly testing the limits between bravery and bravado. The cast includes Jamie Dornan, Tom Hollander and Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci. The film marks the narrative feature debut of Academy Award nominee and critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman.
Lennox founded The Circle, a non-profit organization connecting women across the world to tackle inequality, and met Marie Colvin through Circle events. Subsequently, after Marie’s death, The Circle established The Marie Colvin Journalists’ Network, an online support group for female journalists working in the Arab world.
“It was a privilege and honor to be asked to write and record a special song for A Private War, which not only commemorates the exceptional courage and dedication of war correspondent, Marie Colvin, but, from a human rights perspective, also highlights the importance of ‘from the ground’ media coverage, in war torn situations around the world,” says Lennox.
“It was such an honor to collaborate with Annie, one of the greatest singer/songwriters working today,” says director and producer Heineman. “Like Marie, she is a force of nature. I was already thinking about asking her to write a song for the film, and when I found out that she knew Marie, it was a no-brainer. Annie’s empathy and sensitivity perfectly captures the essence of Marie, but also fits so organically into the soundscape of the film.”
“Annie Lennox has written and performed a beautifully poignant tribute to the memory of Marie Colvin. We could not think of a more perfect talent to lend her voice to this film,” adds Dinerstein.
