Lady Gaga Steals A Mermaid?

Okay, so Lady Gaga didn’t steal an actual mermaid, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she did. The superstar may have, however, stolen an idea from the wonderful Bette Midler. Midler isn’t standing back and watching the mockery take place though. That sassy singer we all adore is fighting back and calling dibs on the magical sea creature.

Lady Gaga has shocked us with yet another weird alter ego, a wheelchair-bound mermaid alter ego Yuyi who debuted last month in France. Although this is something that is right up Gaga’s alley, it isn’t an original masterpiece. Singer and actress Bette Midler says that the character is a direct rip-off of her own wheelchair-bound mermaid alter ego Delores Delago.

The veteran entertainer is fighting back. On July 15th, Midler defended her art and tweeted at Gaga, writing, “I’m not sure @ladygaga knows that I’ve performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people – and many of them are still alive…”

The next day, Midler continued, “Dear @ladygaga if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar- it’s because it is! You can see it on youtube 24/7- with ME performing it” and “Dear @ladygaga Ive been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980-You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker tits-mermaid’s mine.” Midler likes to protect her goods, doesn’t she? I don’t really blame her. In fact, I’d like to correct the singer by saying that she has been doing the mermaid act since her 1978 world tour (give her two more years of ownership).

It seems Gaga doesn’t want to fight with the queen of the mermaids since she never tweeted Midler back or addressed the issue at all. Regardless, Midler has calmed down a bit tweeting Gaga yesterday, “@ladygaga, let’s drink this over at the Emmys in September. Fabulous mermaids can coexist!” Who knew people would fight over Ariel so much?
