Rimi Basu (or just ‘Rimi’ to fans) isn’t like anyone you’ve ever encountered. An ex-medical school student, she traded medicine for music when she dropped out of medical school, moved to India, and promptly dominated the Indian music charts; utterly defying both Indian and American societal expectations all at once.
Basu has since returned to America, entering the ring for a round two. Though she grew up with Indian classical music and dance, she blends her two cultures very well and sings in both Hindi and English. Her sound is reminiscent of Bollywood, and you can check them out on her two EPs, The Unveiling (March 2015) and Crossing Over (June 2015).
Above all though, Basu is more than a musical artist- she is a performer. Since childhood she has been dancing for as long as she has been singing and is an accomplished bellydancer. She incorporates these unique talents into her live performances, making for quite the show. If you enjoy Shakira, Sunidhi Chauhan, Azam Ali, Shreya Ghoshal, and Norah Jones then Rimi Basu is your next fix for music and dance.
You can see and hear this all for yourself in this article’s featured video. The video exemplifies everything I’ve already touched on. If that doesn’t get you hooked, nothing will.
