Brooklyn Bodega has joined forces with iTunes to offer a free 10-song playlist featuring past and present Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival artists, available now exclusively in the iTunes Store. Retailers throughout NYC will also be carrying iTunes cards offering The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival playlist free download.

For those who may be unaware, Brooklyn Bodega is a united family of sorts who represent the true legacy of positive hip-hop. According to the group “demand a higher level of hip-hop programming and are willing to go to great lengths to back it.”

The Bodega was founded in 2006 by Wes Jackson as the online home of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Under the guidance of James Blagden and Alma Geddy-Romero, the Bodega’s initial creative director and administrator, the Bodega transformed into one of the most respected online destinations in the rap game.

Their commentary on the rap culture strives to add a more academic voice to the world of hip-hop journalism. Everything from music business to politics to technology, Brooklyn Bodega delves deep into issues facing the hip-hop community and offers a professional and intellectual voice.

Remaining a constant and ever-present entity within the community, Brooklyn Bodega hosts The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, an annual music event.

The festival is held during July at the Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, which is located on the shores of the East River.

Established in 2005, originating from a parking lot in Williamsburg, The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival has grown into the largest hip hop event in New York City. The festival’s format centers around its first and second stage hip-hop performances and includes a variety of affiliated hip-hop cultural events that occur in the days leading up to the festival.

Hip-Hop DX reports, “To many fans the event is considered conscious hip-hop’s form of Summer Jam or Rock The Bells and fills the void that the latter events have somewhat neglected, many feel. ‘We do it every year because we really feel that hip-hop needs it” said Executive Director, Wes Jackson to “Unless you’re playing Summer Jam or Rock The Bells, there’s really no place that showcases your progressive artists or quality old-school or quality local guys and female artists.”

This year in honor of The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, Brooklyn Bodega is releasing a free iTunes playlist which is in line with the Festival’s commitment to keeping hip-hop affordable and accessible.

This iTunes partnership is the latest in a number of memorable milestones for The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, including being the first large event in the newly renovated Brooklyn Bridge Park and an impressive roster of hip-hop acts that include Grammy winner Lupe Fiasco, Black Thought of The Roots and rap legend and pioneer Big Daddy Kane.
