The Hip-Hop Update – June 10th, 2012

The Hip-Hop Update.

In this week’s installment of the Hip-Hop Update we have loads of content for you to check out. We got a brand new album from Dizzy Wright entitled SmokeOut Conversations which you guys definitely need to cop. Like, I’ telling you, I know I say this all the time, but this album is just perfect. You can listen to it all the way through without skipping a trick, hit repeat, have it on a loop, and you still won’t get tired of it; it’s just too good. We also got some hot mixtapes for you to check out, new joints from Chevy Woods and Gucci Mane. In our “Fresh Audio” section we got fresh tracks from Jesse Abraham, David Dallas, Chuuwee, Oh No, Big Shug, and many more. Moving on to our “Music Video” section, we got new visuals from REKS, Quake Matthews, Illus, NOM, Kol Khaviar, and a few others. This update is kind of special because we have an exclusive interview with the one and only Chuuwee in which he and I discuss his mixtape success and the details of his long-awaited debut, Wild Style. Last but not least we discuss the murder of Lil Phat, Lauryn Hill’s tax issues, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole’s new project, and which Young Money alum will be voicing characters in the new Ice Age movie. You’re Welcome. Enjoy.

ALBUMS:

Dizzy Wright – SmokeOut Conversations

If you haven’t listened to Dizzy Wright before, now is the time to. The Vegas born MC has dropped five mixtapes in the past but only now, after a move to Funk Volume, home of Hopsin, is he starting to gain mainstream attention. This album, SmokeOut Conversations is more of the same from Dizzy but a breath of fresh air in the rap industry.

The remarkable thing about Dizzy is he appears as a two-dimensional weed rapper but once he starts to spit, magnificent poems which entertain and provoke-thought are made clear . You’ll notice this immediately once you hit “play”, and as you journey through “Get Back”, “Solo Dolo”, “Fuck Your Opinion” and others, you’ll soon be captivated and crave more Dizzy. Of course, Dizzy sometimes sacrifices intellectual and conscious lyrics for flow in a very few songs such as “Can’t Trust ‘Em” but the quality of even these tracks is still very high.

Another highlight off the album, and my favorite, is “Accept My Flaws Pt. II”, a sequel to a great track off Dizzy’s most recent mixtape. The rapper proves his storytelling ability with a verse each for the male and female counterparts of a dysfunctional relationship. The features on this album are sparing but impressive – two spots for the soulful voice of Chelle and one for Funk Volume labelmate, SwizZz, who packs a whole verse of punchlines on “Who Want It”.

Overall I absolutely loved the album and thought this was a superb debut album for a 21 year old with a long way to go in his music career; a very promising start. I’m tellin’ you, this is going to be one you wont want to pass up, it’s just too dope and unlike all the mainstream garbage that’s polluting our airwaves now. Very original.

MIXTAPES:

Chevy Woods – Gangland Mixtape

Taylor Gang’s Chevy Woods just released his highly anticipated Gangland mixtape. The full length project features 23 tracks with guest appearances by Wiz Khalifa, Juict J, Soula Boy, LoLa Monre, Trae The Truth Courtney Noelle and Tuki Carter. Notable producers include Lex Luger, Ham Squad, Rob Holladay, ID Labs, Cardo, Sledgreen and Sonny Digital. Chevy previously leaked the Young Jerz produced “U.S.A.,” which opened up a lot of new ears. Expect more of the same as the Pittsburgh emcee continues to step out of the shadow of Wiz.

Gucci Mane – I’m Up

Whatever criticisms fans may offer of Gucci Mane, the man works the mixtape scene hard. Gucci Mane seems to rarely sleep, so the title of his latest mixtape, I’m Up, is an apt one. Spanning a massive 21 tracks, the project is sure to whet the appetites of Gucci Mane fans waiting for the face-tatted rapper’s next studio release.

“Without Me” is a somber introduction, with a minor-key flavor punctuated by low-end bass courtesy of Zaytoven. The title track, aided by 2 Chainz, is your standard Gucci Mane fare, as is “Trap Boomin”, which gets the assist from Rick Ross. “Cyeah Cyeah” is easily one of the most interesting productions on the entire record, with Polow Da Don’s time spent with Timbaland on full display. An evolving beat with very full percussion and an eastern flavor lay the groundwork for Gucci, Lil’ Wayne, and Chris Brown—who continues to make a bid to be taken seriously as an emcee—to work over. It’s a pleasant surprise on a mixtape where much of the production is homogenous. The same can be said of “Get Lost,” which has the Atlanta emcee and Birdman rhyming over something an industrial-sounding bass line, and “Plain Jane”, which plays with that aesthetic as well. When Gucci sounds so comfortable over more interesting production, it begs the question: why doesn’t he switch up beats more often?

What’s most impressive about I’m Up is the supporting cast. In addition to the aforementioned features, Jim Jones, Birdman, Jeremih, T.I., Fabolous, and 8 Ball are among the artists that add some diversity to the project. Sure, most of the time the artists are conforming to Gucci’s lane (see Big Sean on “Brought Out Them Racks”), but they bring with them unique personalities and presences. Even “Scarface” features the legendary southern emcee of the same name—quite the inclusion. No, the features don’t make Gucci step his rhyme game up, but they do make things significantly more interesting.

Whatever criticisms fans may offer of Gucci Mane, the man works the mixtape scene hard. Sure, it’s easier to have such prolific output when your subject matter is so narrow you could thread a needle with it, but Gucci delivers what the people want from him: a handful of hard-hitting beats, a few quotables, and some memorable guest spots. I’m Up has an adequate amount of those things to keep things interesting, so if that’s what you want, cop the download, simple as that.

David Dallas – “Pay Off”

New music, produced by 41, from David Dallas’s upcoming album Falling Into Place.

“There’s always a point where you have to decide whether to actually put your all into any given undertaking. From that point, any number of things can determine whether it ultimately succeeds or fails. To take a ‘leap of faith’ has always seemed more an idealistic statement than a truthful one to me. The word faith implies a higher degree of certainty or confidence than most of us have when attempting to do anything special. In reality, it’s more of a leap of hope – done on a feeling, a hunch, that if what you do is good enough, one day it’ll all pay off.”

Chuuwee – “Rock The Party”

With his Crown Me King mixtape still generating incredible buzz, Chuuwee is in the studio feverishly putting the final touches on his official debut LP, Wild Style, which will be released this summer on Amalgam Digital Records.

Wild Style can be summarized as pure 90s hip-hop, where Chuuwee is taking the classic elements of the golden era with the look, sound and the feel and then applying them to the present day. Inspired by Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, Big L, De La Soul with even hints of DMX, Wild Style promises to be Chuuwee’s break-out project, one that will showcase him as being a frontrunner lyricist from hip-hop’s new school; while also paying homage and respect to the great pioneers of the 1990’s. “Wild Style is the album that’s going to eradicate weak rap off the face of the map. It is the return of real hip-hop. It’s pure and it’s not me trying to re-make it. It’s not me telling you its 90s hip-hop; it is 90s hip-hop” says Chuuwee.

A recent recipient of XXLmag.com’s “The Break,” Chuuwee has finally unveiled the lead-single, “Rock The Party”, (produced by Jonathan Lowell) from Wild Style which can be heard below.

Oh No – “3 Dollars” feat. MF DOOM

Following two successful collaborative efforts alongside fellow producer/rapper The Alchemist as the power duo Gangrene -2010’s Gutter Water and 2012’s Vodka & Ayahuasca- and the 2011 gem with The Alchemist as Gangrene & Roc Marciano, the Greneberg EP; The Oxnard, California based beat-smith and emcee Oh No returns for a solo mission via Brick Records.

Oh No (born Michael Jackson; younger brother of Madlib and son of singer Otis Jackson) was granted unprecedented access to the Rudy Ray Moore / Dolemite audio archives and given free rein to slice, dice, chop and sample his way through the classic-yet-absolutely-filthy catalog. He was able to use legendary material from The Human Tornado, Petey Wheatstraw, the Dolemite Soundtrack and more, plus a multitude of previously unreleased and alternate acapellas and instrumentals. The end result is Ohnomite (available on June 5th, 2012), a 19 track head-banging extravaganza of sloppy funk, dirty soul, and brainy lyricism, all aimed at one thing- making your head nod and your ass shake. And when you add to that guests spots from the likes of MF Doom, Evidence, Phife Dawg, The Alchemist, Erick Sermon, Rapper Pooh, MED, Guilty Simpson, Roc Marciano, Sticky Fingaz, Chino XL, Roc C, Prozack Turner, Termanology, Frank Nitt and more, you are left with a one of a kind album from a one of a kind musician. Big Shug – “For The Real” feat. Slaine, Termanology, REKS, & Singapore Kane

His name says it all; standing at well over six feet tall and with the intimidating muscular build of a linebacker, Big Shug’s physical presence alone is enough to command attention. His voice, a hoarse rumble effective for delivering both fearsome threats or smooth crooning as his alter-ego Shugie Diamonds, is one of rap’s most instantly recognizable. As both a solo artist and founding member of Gang Starr, his name has consistently shown up in album credits alongside hip-hop’s elite for over 20 years.

But despite that, Shug has never courted the spotlight. As countless other rappers, and even Gang Starr themselves, fell by the wayside, he has persevered through fans’ evolving tastes and a changing record industry by staying true to the ideals – integrity, respect for the streets and love of music – that have fueled his career. Nowhere is that more apparent than on I.M. 4-Eva.

Stitching together the various parts of his career into one, this album, true to its title, is a comprehensive look at who Big Shug is, where he came from and where he is going. With his bruising flow over classic DJ Premier produced cuts bringing back nostalgic 90s memories, he pays tribute to the fans who have stuck with him since the beginning. I.M. 4-Eva – Shug’s fourth solo album and his first since 2008′s Other Side Of The Game – marks the next chapter in his ongoing maturation as an artist. The album reunites Shug with old friends like M.O.P., Fat Joe and Premier, while also connecting with a new generation of hip-hop fans and artists alike.

In addition to the 17 all new studio cuts, Brick Records has presented a timeless package; a hard back, 36 page book chronicling The True History of Gang Starr as told by Big Shug, plus anecdotes from his 20+ year career, rare never before seen vintage photos and more. Through his words and his music, Big Shug truly shows here why he is 4-Eva. Big Shug’s I.M. 4-Eva LP and “The True History Of Gang Starr” will be released on July 24th, 2012.

Tracklisting for Big Shug’s I.M. 4-Eva LP:

Sadat X – “I Know This Game”

Loyalty Digital Corp strikes again, this time with the second single off Sadat X’s upcoming album New York entitled “I Know This Game”. Produced by Local-MU12 Member Real McKoy, this record is gritty and hits hard. The scratches provided by DJ Grouch fit the song perfectly, point blank; Sadat X goes in on this one like the true veteran he is. One of a very select few to record with both Biggie Smalls and Jay-Z it is safe to say when you see the title “I Know This Game” you better believe him. The single is a free download and includes a Digital Booklet with pictures from a Sadat X Photo shoot done by Producer/Photographer JFR (Producer of “We In New York”).

Rilgood – “Who Should I Be?” feat. Maffew Ragazino

It’s a “Brooklyn thing” today as two of arguably the best spitters coming out of Brooklyn join up for this story track entitled “Who Should I Be”. Rilgood made a strong imprint onto the game earlier this year with his JFK mixtape that hit the blogosphere by storm and was spotlighted by some major media outlets such Hypebeast and Prefix Mag. Produced by Woodro Skillson, his compadre Maffew Ragazino provided an impressive assist on the record with fearless wordplay as well and will be featured on Rilgood’s upcoming Great Expectations mixtape due out in July.

MUSIC VIDEOS:

Kol Khaviar – “They Don’t Give A FCUK”

This is privileged content, and I guarantee you that Static Multimedia is the only place you’ll be able to see this music video and get this information. A bit after we made our exclusive interview available on StaticMultimedia.com, Khaviar’s first music video, for “T.R.O.Y.”, blew up on YouTube garnering literally thousands of views in just a matter of weeks. Then he released the music video for his “Bad Mamma Jamma” track which was produced by J. Cole. This visual was a lot more complex and evolved; Kol really made it clear that he was evolving as an artist and he destroyed the “Blow Up” instrumental. For those who felt “shortened” by the single verse on “T.R.O.Y.”, this latest track came equipped with three full-length verses which were enough to make your face melt. Shortly after, the Chi-Town fire-breather released visuals for “Terminator”,“People Talk”, “They Call Him”, and “The Sermon” respectively. Each of these videos quickly received thousands upon thousands of views; the delicacy had been acquired by the underground.

This brings us to today. Static Multimedia in collaboration with Kol Khaviar are bringing you a SUPER EXCLUSIVE music video for your viewing pleasure. This visual is for Kol’s latest single entitled “They Don’t Give A FCUK” and is, as you already know, off his Revenge Of The Regular N!99@ mixtape. This video was directed by yours truly, Grant David, with assistance from James Houda on camera and Shayne Gastelum on lighting. The great Donnie King handled editing along with Mr. Khaviar himself. The concept behind this video, and what Kol and I were trying to convey, is that the rap game is a vicious and dangerous place to try and make your bread. The artists that are awarded and recognized are almost never the most deserving while the ones with the power to make a difference are never even afforded that single opportunity. But even the artists themselves aren’t completely blameless either. If the music business is just that, a business, then don’t you as an artist have the responsibility of ensuring a quality product? And this isn’t solely because of industry leaders or artists either; sure they’re extremely out of touch and put money before art, but the fans and the consumers also have a responsibility to discourage wackness. And this is exactly what you’re doing when you buy these awful tapes from sub-par artists; you’re just telling record execs that we want me more this trash. So that was kind of the mindset and ideologies we constantly contemplated during are pre-production and production phases of the shoot. That was the entire message behind the video; it was the reluctant and frustrated observation that the rap community doesn’t care about Kol Khaviar (not yet anyways) even though he’s rawer than 90% of these radio rappers, while simultaneously recognizing that the ones who do, already, the die hard Khaviar supporters, are the very same people that are going to make sure that this injustice doesn’t continue any longer.

As raw as Kol is you would expect him to be arrogant, nothing could be further from the truth. You can tell how humble the dude is by simply referring to the title of his latest mixtape, Revenge Of The Regular N!99@. The key word there being “regular”, a title that Kol has given himself. He would have you think that he is just a hip-hop connoisseur with a side hustle working at a barber shop that just so happens to spit hot fire like he was Dylan. However, after one listen to the Revenge Of The Regular N!99@ mixtape you’ll see that Kol Khaviar is anything but regular. The windy city native seamlessly shifts from club bangers to street poems which makes his latest mixtape a must listen to. Revenge Of The Regular N!99@ is one that you will definitely regret not checking out.

REKS – “Chasin”

On April 24th, 2012, REKS released his new LP, Straight, No Chaser, which is entirely produced by Statik Selektah and features appearances by Action Bronson, Slaine, Termanology and more.

One of the earlier leaks, “Chasin,” from REKS’ Straight, No Chaser now appears in video form. Check it out below and make sure to pick up Straight, No Chaser, the album is absolutely phenomenal. True hip-hop.

Quake Matthews – “Set You Free”

Quake Matthews has returned to the scene with his sophomore release The Book Of Matthew. The track and accompanying music video mark the first solo effort for the Halifax hip-hop artist since 2010’s The Myth.

The Book Of Matthew is available for free download at quakematthews.com. The 11-track project features production from industry heavy-weights like J. Cardim (Lil’ Wayne, Joe Budden, Ludacris) and Tone Mason (Drake, Jay-Z) and guest appearances from Freeway, Termanology and Canadian R&B crooner, JRDN.

The 23-year old described the project “I feel I’ve really come into my own as an artist since The Myth was released. I named the album The Book Of Matthew because it’s a very reflective, personal record of my journey thus far in music. I want to give fans a taste of everything, not just the good times, but the highs the lows and all the moments that define who I am in between.”

The first leak from the project, “Warrior” feat. Freeway & Termanology made quite an impact on the internet and now Quake follows it up with a new video for “Set You Free” which you can see below.

Illus – “The Gift” feat. Blueprint, Ill Bill, & DJ Johnny Juice, “Extraordinary” feat. Blueprint, and “Son Of A Beat” feat. Chuuwee

2012 promises to be a memorable year for Illus, as he and his wife recently welcomed the birth of their first child and his new project, Family First, (IN STORES NOW) focuses on the shared love of that experience to create 12-tracks that mend meaningful, powerful, heart-felt lyrics to hardcore hip-hop production. Family First is a celebration of family and life both in the literal sense and that of the larger global hip-hop community and the connection we all have through our children and the spirit, heart, passion and soul of the culture.

On Family First, Illus collaborates lyrically and sonically with some of best emcees and producers in the business. Each emcee featured is also the producer of the track they appear on and this collaborative process is a first for any hip-hop project. Family First is also co-produced by Public Enemy luminary DJ Johnny Juice and the star-studded guest emcee/producer list includes; Apathy, Ill Bill, Blueprint, J-Live, Erin Barra, Headsnack, Phashara, Chuuwee, Esoteric and more.

“The Gift” features Blueprint, Ill Bill and DJ Johnny Juice discussing what “Family First” means to them. “It is a love letter to my son, my family and the universal hip-hop family. I shot and edited this with help from my wife, learning Adobe Premier and After Effects as I went, so I could share these very special moments in our lives with all of you. This isn’t your typical hip-hop song, nor is it meant to be a ‘hit’ or a ‘banger’. It’s simply an incredible beat produced by DJ Johnny Juice and some honest, heart felt words by some very talented artists and a message to my son that I hope he will appreciate later in life.”

NOM – “In My Lifetime”

A member of Fokis’ bi-coastal conglomerate Local MU12, Bronx representative NOM releases his first video, “In My Lifetime”, from his upcoming mixtape Different Breed which will be released on June 26th, 2012.

NOM’s previous single “Nightmares Of A Dream” was featured on a variety of sites and gotten some really good feedback. NOM responded with a statement saying, “I appreciate all the support I have been receiving thus far, it really makes me feel great to know that my hard work is being appreciated by so many people is a good feeling”.

Cameron GreY – “No Tommorrow”

Cameron GreY speaks directly to “GenerationY” with his new video for “No Tomorrow” and its passionately lip-synched by a close friend of Cameron’s Mr. Billy Mays III (fun factoid—Billy Mays III is the son of Billy Mays Jr, the former “king of the pitch” spokesperson from the Home Shopping Network).

Upon releasing his first mixtape, Space Jams, (hosted by Mr. Peter Parker & DJ Ill Will) in 2009 Cameron GreY began opening for established acts such as Clipse, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Travis Porter, Asher Roth, Twista, Chip Tha Ripper, Machine Gun Kelly. Opening up for those artists set the table for his second mixtape, N.A.S.A. (Never Allowing Success To Alter), in 2011, which quickly became a fan-favorite at Datpiff.com.

Continuing a story is never easy (most movie sequels validate as much), but Columbus, Ohio native Cameron GreY’s latest mixtape, Crash Landing, is not necessarily a sequel, as much as it is a continuum from where he left off with N.A.S.A. Cameron GreY’s music soars with the astronauts and all spacey inhabitants and Crash Landing proves that he cannot be confined to time nor space (nor should you!).

Crash Landing includes a collaboration (“If I Were King”) with fellow Columbus native Copywrite.

Static Multimedia Exclusive – Chuuwee Interview

Influenced by his mother and many great mc’s like Jay-Z, Outkast, UGK, and others, Chuuwee blends the borders of underground, backpack hip-hop, and mainstream rap. Since his rise, many people have tried discouraging Chuuwee, claiming he wasn’t built to create music and he didn’t have what it took to be successful. However, negativity hasn’t slowed him a bit, opening for revered artists like Mistah F.A.B., Rakim and Rhymefest in Los Angeles, California fuel his fire and are evidence that Chuuwee can definitely hold his own. He is already building quite the reputation throughout Northern California. Beyond his love of making his own music, everything from writing to producing, Chuuwee also enjoys sharing his thoughts and seeing how people react to his ideas. He has a true passion for performing and supports the mentality that if your live performance isn’t any good, then your music won’t matter at all.

Chuuwee’s Crown Me King mixtape serves as the prelude to his long-awaited official solo-debut, Wild Style, which will be released on May 29th, 2012 via Amalgam Digital*. Whereas Chuuwee’s previous efforts were hybrid sub-genres he created such as “neo-boombap” (neo-soul meets boom-bap) or “hooliganarism” which Chuuwee describes as Treach of Naughty By Nature meets Wakka Flocka Flame, Wild Style can be summarized as pure 90s hip-hop, where he is taking the classic elements of the golden era with the look, sound and the feel and then applying them to the present day. It’s pure, and it’s not me trying to re-make it. It’s not me telling you its 90s hip-hop; it is 90s hip-hop” says Chuuwee.

(*note: after this interview was conducted, Wild Style was pushed back and is now supposed to be released this summer. Chuuwee stated via Facebook, “WILDSTYLE! IS BEING PUSHED BACK FOR SUMMER 2012. I know I know some of ya’ll gone hate me for this. The fact of the matter, however, is that it’s just not time yet. I want to get BIGGERR BETTER features…”)

Lauryn Hill Issues Statement Addressing IRS Allegations

Lauryn Hill issued a statement late yesterday addressing the news surrounding her tax evasion charges. While she acknowledges her actions were uncalled for, she stated she was trying to rectify this situation for years.

“My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes. This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.”

The Grammy-Award winning singer also suggests the authorities knew about her situation, but proceeded to pursue the case against her anyway.

“I conveyed all of this when questioned as to why I did not file taxes during this time period. Obviously, the danger I faced was not accepted as reasonable grounds for deferring my tax payments, as authorities, who despite being told all of this, still chose to pursue action against me, as opposed to finding an alternative solution.”

Lauryn’s reasoning for deferring her tax payments was due to her decision to remove herself and her family from the spotlight for protection as well as from an industry she felt was non-conducive to her growth as an artist.

“For the past several years, I have remained what others would consider underground. I did this in order to build a community of people, like-minded in their desire for freedom and the right to pursue their goals and lives without being manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda.”

While details on rappers Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole’s joint album remain scarce, Kendrick did speak a little more in-depth on the project during an interview with Fuse at the Bonnaroo Festival. The rapper spoke on finding time to record with J. Cole while touring and also during their off days.

“We been grinding man. It’s been a long, long, long, long road but it don’t stop. We still doing it,” Kendrick Lamar explained in a video posted on HipHop-n-More.com. “I’ve been on a bus with Cole while he’s on the Drake tour and we’ve been finding time in between our days, our open days, to go out there and record. So it’s been dope.”

Kendrick also spoke on the production on the project which he says J. Cole is handling the majority of and also went on to stress that they’re not worried about choosing a release date just yet.

“He’s doing the majority of the production. A few verses on there…We don’t know right now. We’re just doing the music man,” said Kendrick when asked when his joint album with Cole will be released. “It’s crazy because we was talking about that. We was like, ‘Let’s just finish recording first before we think about any dates.’ And we got some crazy joints in the stash.”
