First Black Batman Gets Own Series
His name is Batwing, and instead of protecting the citizens of Gotham, he will be guarding the African Continent. He will be gaining his own comic book series in September. Artist Ben Oliver and well established DC writer Judd Winick will be creating this comic together. Judd Winick has his plate full, because he is also commencing a new Catwoman series.
This character was first introduced in Batman Incorporated, and writer Winick explains that there really is not much to work off of because Batwing was only seen for about five pages. However, this is a challenge that Winick began to appreciate, “as I thought about it and discussed it and started realizing how much potential this character had, things just started opening up to me, and ideas started to explode in a wonderful way.â€
The change in location obviously would require some change in tactics in approaching a Batman scenario. For example, Winick explains that instead of a sort of detective like atmosphere, it is more like a “high adventure.†Africa as an environment that is largely untapped and rich in material. This blank page is what interested Winick.
Batman fans will not be disappointed because the Bat-family is slated to pop in once in a while to aid with the African Batman. Due to the fact that Africa is so large, Batwing will be headquartered in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a fictional city based on a real one. According to Winick, he will be “zipping around here and there†on the African continent. Fans can expect to see some new villains, but should also be on the lookout for old foes. Winick stresses that this is a comic about superheroes, not a politically driven piece but some of those elements will be put into the story.
Batman fans: be on the lookout for this new ground breaking Batman series!
