Housemates Kate and Michael are screwed. One of their party guests, Jamie, had sex and has now turned into a zombie. Seems the undead plague is a sexually transmitted disease that turns its victims into horny, voracious killers after an incubation period that makes them extremely promiscuous. They tie her up to try and figure what to do next, but she infects another guest. Kate and Michael get caught up in an epic struggle for survival, but the very nature of the plague forces them to confront every bad relationship decision they ever made as well as their deep-seated fear of commitment.
An extremely well-written, edgy story that grips the reader on the first page and draws them right in. It’s twisted, funny, gross and sad all at once. The characters are gritty and visceral, so real, they could be any one of us. There are no purely valiant heroes here, just ordinary, brave people confronting a nightmare of global proportions and doing anything to survive. Imagine fighting zombies with an iPhone app.
Beamer has an original, cool style combining raw, honest prose with razor-sharp wit. It’s like Twilight Zone meets Army of Darkness meets Sex and the City. She takes the iconic zombie myth and spins it in a whole new direction. This is social commentary filtered through bed time nightmares.
Anyone who enjoys reading a great horror yarn will love this story. I also think that anyone who simply loves good literature will be highly entertained, although I do recommend a strong stomach as there is quite a lot of gore in here. This is a brilliant debut novel and I look forward to future works from Amelia Beamer.
