Cults, the acclaimed alt/pop duo of Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, just dropped their latest track, “Hung the Moon.” This song is part of their eagerly awaited album, To the Ghosts, coming out on July 26th via Imperial.

“Hung the Moon” stays true to Cults’ cinematic sound, with its sparse beat and loose bassline. Ethereal and haunting, it’s the perfect album closer. The track’s woozy vibe feels like a David Lynch fever dream, especially when Madeline sings, “Let it saturate, a love in bloom, I know it’s you, you hung the moon.” Her vocals fade into a siren’s wail, dissolving into silence.

Brian describes it as having a “Twin Peaks, roadhouse vibe,” calling it a sweet nursery rhyme with an ominous twist. He adds, “It goes back to the concept of growing up. Life doesn’t stop when you check all of the boxes; it gets crazier. There’s always possibility, adversity, and fun up ahead.”

The first tracks from To the Ghosts, “Left My Keys” and “Crybaby,” show off Cults’ knack for blending alternative sounds with catchy pop melodies. Fans and critics alike, including Pitchfork, Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, DORK, and The Line of Best Fit, are buzzing about the new music.

Cults have a history of impressive collaborations, working with The Weeknd and J. Cole on his hit “She Knows,” and even indie director Jim Jarmusch. They recently thrilled fans with a remix of Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight,” expressing their excitement on social media about the project.

The band will be on the road for the rest of 2024. Their U.S. headline tour kicks off in August, including a performance at Lollapalooza on August 4th, followed by supporting Vampire Weekend on their fall tour, and wrapping up with UK and EU headline dates in November. Check out their full tour schedule below.

To the Ghosts was born during the pandemic, with Madeline and Brian writing music from 10am-5pm on weekdays, free from deadlines. The album was created in Brian’s apartment and later refined in Los Angeles with producer Shane Stoneback. Co-produced by Cults and Stoneback, it was mixed by John Congleton and mastered by Heba Kadry.
