Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, praised by The New York Times as “American folk masters,” are releasing their 10th studio album, Woodland, on August 23rd through their own label, Acony Records. This new collection features 10 tracks, blending full band pieces with intricate duets, showcasing their signature sound and storytelling, solidifying their place at the forefront of acoustic music.
The album is named after and recorded at their Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, TN. About the album and the studio, they shared, “Woodland is central to everything we’ve done for the past twenty years. We’ve spent the last four years reviving it after the 2020 tornado and making this record. The music captures a swirl of contradictions: emptiness, fullness, joy, grief, destruction, and permanence.”
Woodland is their first album since 2020’s All the Good Times, a covers and classic folk songs collection that won the 2021 GRAMMY Award for Best Folk Album. It’s also their first album of new original music since 2017’s Poor David’s Almanack. You can pre-order or pre-save Woodland now. Welch and Rawlings announce new shows this fall including St Paul, Kansas City, Atlanta, Detroit and more (full dates below). They will also return to Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI where they will close the festival main stage at the historic Newport Folk Festival on July 27th. These upcoming dates will be some of their first public performances since appearing on 2019’s Oscars. The pair will announce additional dates throughout 2024 and 2025.
