José González returns with a striking new chapter in his ever-evolving artistry, unveiling the official video for “A Perfect Storm,” a standout from his latest album Against the Dying of the Light. The song pulses with intricate fingerpicking that gradually swells into a distorted crescendo, mirroring the emotional turbulence of an age defined by rapid technological change.

Rather than preaching, González leans into tension, reflecting a world suspended between wonder and unease. His background in biochemistry subtly informs the song’s thematic core, especially its warning about an accelerating race toward losing control of artificial intelligence. The accompanying video amplifies that message, using AI not just as a tool but as a subject of scrutiny.

‘A Perfect Storm’ is about how we ourselves are creating the conditions for a more and more turbulent future. Compared to natural risks, these are man-made and therefore not random.

In a clever twist, what appears to be behind-the-scenes footage reveals itself as entirely fabricated, underscoring how convincingly AI can simulate human experience. This unsettling reveal lingers long after the video ends.

Against the Dying of the Light continues González’s tradition of blending intimate songwriting with expansive ideas. Inspired by thinkers like Jonathan Haidt, Yuval Harari, and Steven Pinker, the album explores morality, narrative, and the fragile balance between progress and humanity.

With moments of warmth and playfulness, including the Spanish-language “Pajarito,” González proves that amid uncertainty, music can remain human. Ultimately, the album invites listeners to question the systems shaping their lives while holding onto empathy, curiosity, and a sense of shared responsibility.
