Bob Mould’s beloved ’90s band Sugar is taking fans behind the scenes with Changes: The Story of Sugar, a new 20-minute mini documentary that celebrates one of the most joyful chapters of Mould’s career.
Premiering today on YouTube, the film traces Sugar’s journey from early rehearsal rooms to the band’s sold-out reunion shows at New York’s Webster Hall this past May. Following the premiere, Mould joins fans for a live YouTube afterparty.
Directed by Rob Hatch-Miller and filmed during the Webster Hall run, Changes blends rare archival footage with fresh interviews featuring Bob Mould, David Barbe, and Malcolm Travis. Fans can also expect excerpts from Mould’s memoir See A Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody, along with appearances from special guests.
Among the highlights is never-before-seen footage of Sugar’s first-ever performance at Athens’ legendary 40 Watt Club, alongside vintage clips from the band’s MTV 120 Minutes era and Mould’s early-’90s European tour with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Nirvana.
“It seems to have been one of the happiest eras of Bob’s life,” says Hatch-Miller. Mould echoes the sentiment in the film, admitting, “Few know the half of how much fun I had with Sugar.”
The documentary arrives just as Sugar prepares to launch the U.S. leg of its Love You Even Still World Tour on August 11 in Denver. The 24-date trek includes multiple sold-out performances, festival appearances, and stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, New York, Atlanta, and more before wrapping up in Athens, Georgia, on October 24.
Adding to the feel-good vibes, a portion of every ticket sold will benefit The Trevor Project, supporting LGBTQ+ young people through suicide prevention and crisis intervention services.
