Serving as a prequel to the beloved 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” this enchanting film explores the early days of the eccentric chocolatier. With a screenplay co-written by Simon Farnaby, it brings Roald Dahl’s iconic 1964 novel, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” to life once again.
Leading the star-studded cast is the talented Timothée Chalamet, portraying the titular role of Willy Wonka. Joining him are Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant in captivating supporting roles.
The development of “Wonka” began when Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights to the iconic character in October 2016. Casting auditions were held to find the perfect actor for the title role, with Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling, and Ezra Miller among the contenders. Eventually, in May 2021, Timothée Chalamet was officially confirmed to portray Wonka, and the supporting cast was announced in September of the same year.
Principal photography commenced in the United Kingdom in September 2021, with filming taking place at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Watford, as well as in Lyme Regis, Bath, and the Rivoli Ballroom in Brockley, London. Additional scenes were shot in Oxford in December and February. Neil Hannon contributed original songs to the film, while Joby Talbot provided the captivating original score.
