HBO’s latest entry in its acclaimed “Music Box” documentary series returns with Music Box: It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, a moving and meticulously crafted portrait of one of the 1990s’ most influential and enigmatic artists. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg, the film premieres December 4 on HBO and streams on HBO Max.

The documentary traces Buckley’s meteoric rise—from an emotional debut at a tribute to his father, folk musician Tim Buckley, to securing a deal with Columbia Records and releasing Grace, the only studio album he completed. Blending rock, folk, and soaring operatic tones, the record challenged genre boundaries and helped cement Buckley as a singular voice of his era. His haunting interpretation of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” remains one of modern music’s most celebrated covers.

Drawing on never-before-seen archival footage and intimate interviews with his mother Mary Guibert, former partners, and bandmates, the film dives into Buckley’s creative process, vulnerabilities, and the overwhelming pressures that surrounded the promise of a second album. His retreat to Memphis—and his tragic accidental drowning in 1997—left the music world stunned and a brilliant career unfinished.

By weaving together personal testimony and rare material, It’s Never Over offers a tender, comprehensive look at an artist whose impact continues to resonate. It’s a powerful start to the next chapter of HBO’s “Music Box” series.
