The U.S. Postal Service is marking 250 years of unwavering commitment to connecting American service members with the loved ones they leave behind. From the earliest days of the Revolutionary War to operations spanning more than 85 countries today, military mail has remained a lifeline of comfort, hope and morale.

This mission began with George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, whose partnership set the foundation for a postal system dedicated to those in uniform. As USPS Historian Steve Kochersperger notes, a handwritten letter — sometimes carrying a familiar scent or smudge of lipstick — delivers something no email ever could.

Across generations, the Postal Service adapted to meet the demands of global conflict. During the Civil War, “Soldier’s Letters” ensured troops could write home even without postage, while money orders and absentee ballots kept them connected to family and democracy. World War I brought the first all-military mail network, and World War II introduced V-Mail, a microfilmed innovation that saved 98% of cargo space and carried more than a billion messages home.

From the massive mail flows of Korea and Vietnam to today’s APO/FPO/DPO system, USPS continues to work closely with the Military Postal Service Agency to deliver reliably and securely.

For generations, veterans and military families have also found meaningful careers within USPS, strengthening the organization’s deep ties to the nation it serves.
