In 2019, Earth Ball emerged organically from the creative union of Isabel Ford, John Brennan, and Jeremy Van Wyck, initially born out of the pragmatic necessity of naming a performance engagement. However, what began as a utilitarian measure swiftly evolved into a meticulously crafted artistic endeavor. Characterized by a dedication to complete improvisation, the ensemble’s lineup dynamically expands for various projects, now featuring Kellen Maclaughlin on guitar and Liam Murphy on saxophone.
Each member of Earth Ball brings a rich and diverse musical background, having contributed to esteemed bands such as Shearing Pinx, Plan Your Future, Kamikaze Nurse, Eschatons, and Psychedelic Dirt. Their individual collaborations with renowned artists such as Deerhoof, Raven Chacon, Chris Corsano, and William Hooker, among others, significantly enrich the collective tapestry of their musical journey.
Despite their relatively brief existence, Earth Ball has achieved notable milestones. Their inaugural cassette release, ‘Fruiting Bodies,’ debuted in 2021 under Misophonia Records UK, followed by the self-released album ‘Go to Earth.’ The creative momentum persisted with the digital and cassette release of ‘Have One’ in 2023. As their dynamic presence reverberated across the west coast of Canada, the ensemble sets its sights on extending their reach to the east coast and the UK in 2024. Notably, their upcoming LP, slated for release on May 20, 2024, under the esteemed UK label Upset The Rhythm, marks a significant milestone in their artistic trajectory.
Earth Ball’s live performances epitomize their dedication to spontaneous composition, offering audiences an unparalleled and transformative experience with each iteration. Their notable opening act for the esteemed experimental duo Wolf Eyes in August 2023 serves as a testament to their stature within the psychedelic music scene.
