Beloved New York alt-pop duo Cults, compromised of Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion have shared their evocative new single, “Crybaby,” out today. “Crybaby” sees Cults making a welcome return with their first new music in two years, hinting at more on the horizon from the multi-platinum duo.
Cults will be hitting the road in a big way in the coming months, with their own headline tour, a stop at Lollapalooza, and supporting Vampire Weekend in the fall. On “Crybaby,” right out of the gate, symphonic bells toll above a tribal beat laced with a dissonant guitar riff. Shaky tambourine gives way to a swooning horn section, and Madeline’s croon echoes with a lament, “Crybaby, you waste a lot of time it seems.” The track keeps in the tradition of Cults cinematic sound, with a breezy, infectious hook. “Crybaby” was co-written by Oblivion and Follin and produced by Cults and longtime cohort Shane Stoneback.
Speaking about the new single, Cults comment, “‘Crybaby’ marks a new direction of exploration. We experimented with a lighter sound influenced by The Crystals, Joe Meek & Kraftwerk. A fun song but also a call out to both sides of codependency.”
