Mike Flanagan takes on one of horror’s most iconic franchises with Scarlett Johansson leading a supernatural crime thriller arriving March 12.
Darkness has a way of coming back. And this time, it knows exactly who to find.
The trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs has arrived, bringing together acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass) and Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson for a chilling new chapter in the legendary franchise.
Johansson stars as New York City detective Julie Miller, who put an end to the reign of satanic serial killer Father Sunday 13 years ago. The case made her a hero, but the nightmare isn’t over. When a new killer leaves a gruesome message bearing her name inside a church crypt, Miller is pulled back into a case that reaches far beyond anything she could have imagined.
With help from a former prison chaplain played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle), Miller uncovers a disturbing connection between generations of serial killers, including notorious figures H.H. Holmes and the Zodiac. What begins as a murder investigation soon threatens to expose something far more sinister.
The impressive cast also includes Diane Lane, Scoot McNairy, Laurence Fishburne and John Leguizamo in what promises to be a particularly menacing role as Father Sunday.
Written and directed by Flanagan, The Exorcist: Martyrs blends supernatural horror with a crime thriller’s dark investigative edge. With a filmmaker known for building dread and exploring the darkness lurking beneath ordinary lives, this latest entry looks ready to take the franchise into unsettling new territory.
The Exorcist: Martyrs arrives in theaters March 12.
