Last month, New York City’s Hello Mary dropped their first new track, “0%,” since their 2023 debut self-titled album. The song was an instant success, earning accolades from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Paste Magazine, Brooklyn Vegan, and many others. Now, the band is excited to announce their new album, Emita Ox, set to release on September 13 via Frenchkiss Records.

Comprised of Helena Straight, Stella Wave, and Mikaela Oppenheimer, the trio channels their emotions into alt-rock anthems, wielding them like flaming weapons and proudly displaying them as trophies of their collective resilience. Since their formation in 2019, Hello Mary has carved out a unique niche with their fuzzed-out anthems and darkly playful sound. Emita Ox pushes this even further, diving into heavy distortion and psychedelic dreamscapes, creating a bold, virtuosic alt-rock universe. The album was co-produced with Alex Farrar (known for his work with MJ Lenderman, Indigo De Souza, Wednesday, and Snail Mail) in Asheville, NC.

In addition to the album announcement, Hello Mary has released a new single, “Three.” The song tells the story of a young girl named Emita and her pet ox. Helena Straight explains, “Three was written after I’d been in a creative rut for a couple of months. I wasn’t focused on delivering a specific message—my goal was just to complete a song, regardless of whether I liked it or not.” While the song doesn’t have a defined meaning, its imagery resonates with the band’s spirit. Oxen symbolize strength and resilience, mirroring the themes of perseverance found throughout Emita Ox. Hello Mary chooses to face life’s challenges head-on, refusing to be defeated by them.
