First released on June 20, 1975, Steven Spielberg’s thriller didn’t just terrify beachgoers—it changed Hollywood forever. Jaws became the first film to surpass $100 million at the domestic box office, redefining the release model and cementing summer as the prime season for event films.
At only 27, Spielberg transformed production challenges into groundbreaking suspense. When the mechanical shark “Bruce” failed, he relied on suggestion—shadows, music, and editing—to create fear. The result was a new cinematic language that influenced thrillers for generations.
The film earned four Academy Award nominations, winning three: Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Original Score for John Williams’ now-iconic theme. It also launched Spielberg’s enduring collaboration with Williams, shaping the soundscape of modern cinema.
Adapted from Peter Benchley’s bestseller, Jaws follows Amity Island’s police chief (Roy Scheider), a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss), and a shark hunter (Robert Shaw) as they face off against a great white threatening their community.
