José González is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his beloved debut album Veneer with a captivating new rework of “Crosses,” reimagined by acclaimed English producer Bibio. This hypnotic version is the first in a series of reworks that reinterpret songs from Veneer as part of the album’s final anniversary chapter.
Bibio’s take on “Crosses” is subtle yet transformative, layering José’s original vocals with ethereal textures and a fresh chordal structure. González himself praised the remix, saying: “Love what Bibio did with ‘Crosses’! Casting the vocals into a different set of chords and adding his dreamy soundscapes makes it sound like a different song—while maintaining the vocals intact. Great work!”
This new remix series follows a year of anniversary celebrations that began in 2023, including a deluxe Veneer reissue and intimate solo performances across iconic venues such as Royal Albert Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall. These shows highlighted the lasting influence of Veneer—a record that blended emotional folk with minimalist, rhythm-inspired production in a way that quietly reshaped the genre.
González’s artistic openness has long invited crossover appeal. His now-iconic cover of The Knife’s “Heartbeats” was included in Ministry of Sound’s Chillout Sessions Vol. 9 in 2006, and he’s collaborated with electronic figures like DJ Tiësto and Zero 7. As José revealed in a recent Life of the Record podcast, this cross-genre spirit was intentional: “I wanted to do something more repetitive and linear, inspired by dance music.”
In support of this new chapter, González will embark on a European tour beginning June 18 in Oslo, running through summer into early fall. He has also rescheduled his postponed U.S. tour to November 2025. Fans with tickets from the canceled October 2024 dates can use them for the rescheduled shows.
Bibio’s reinterpretation of “Crosses” is a fitting tribute to a track—and an artist—that helped redefine the boundaries of folk music. It’s a reminder of how José González’s work continues to resonate, evolve, and inspire—two decades on.
