Remember Matchbox cars? Those tiny vehicles that somehow turned the living-room floor into a full-blown highway system? Well, Hollywood is taking that childhood imagination and making it considerably bigger.

Matchbox: The Movie arrives on Apple TV October 9, 2026, with John Cena leading a globe-trotting action-comedy that has surprisingly little to do with talking toy cars—and quite a lot to do with explosions, spies and ridiculous vehicle stunts.

Cena plays Sean, a former childhood friend who has spent years working undercover for the CIA. When he returns home, he reconnects with his old group of friends. Unfortunately, his secret life follows him home, dragging everyone into an international chase with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

The cast also includes Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Arturo Castro, Danai Gurira and Corey Stoll.

Think Less Barbie, More Old-School Action Movie

Director Sam Hargrave, best known for Extraction and Extraction II, isn’t trying to copy the formula of Barbie. Instead, he describes Matchbox as a love letter to the big, playful action movies of the 1990s.

And that could be good news for anyone who misses practical action.

Hargrave says the production went big on real-world stunts, including a car rolling over 14 times, a helicopter flying beneath an underpass and a semi-truck being sent off a 200-foot bridge using remote-driving technology.

So yes, those Matchbox cars are getting a serious upgrade.

Why Matchbox?

The movie uses the brand mostly as a connection to childhood. Sean and his friends grew up playing with Matchbox cars, turning miniature vehicles into elaborate adventures. Now they’re adults—and their imaginary adventures are suddenly happening for real.

Matchbox itself dates back to 1953, when Jack Odell created a miniature vehicle small enough to fit inside a matchbox. More than 70 years later, the brand remains one of the world’s best-known toy car lines.

It’s a simple idea: take something small and make it huge.

The Bottom Line

Matchbox: The Movie looks like a throwback action adventure with comedy, friendship, international mayhem and plenty of cars flying through the air.

It’s PG-13, runs about two hours and six minutes, and hits Apple TV October 9.

If John Cena, practical stunts and old-school action movies sound like your kind of Friday night, this one may be worth putting on the watch list.

And somewhere, a tiny Matchbox car is probably feeling pretty important right now.
