Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound brings back the razor-sharp action fans remember, but with a bold new direction. Developed by The Game Kitchen and published by Dotemu under license from Koei Tecmo, this 2D side-scrolling action platformer is more than just a nostalgic throwback—it’s a refined, reimagined spin-off of the legendary Ninja Gaiden series.
At the heart of Ragebound is Kenji Mozu, a fierce new warrior stepping up to defend Hayabusa Village from a demonic invasion during Ryu Hayabusa’s mysterious absence. He’s not alone for long. Enter Kumori, a kunoichi from the Black Spider Clan, initially sent to battle the demons on her own terms. Following a pivotal event early in the game, Kumori becomes fused with Kenji, transforming into a secondary playable character that players can switch between to maximize combat and mobility.
The game is now available on Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with a physical edition for PS5 and Switch coming in September.
Ragebound thrives on tight controls and fast-paced action. The spirit of the NES originals is alive in its precise movement and brutal-but-fair combat, but new mechanics add a fresh layer. The standout is the Guillotine Boost, a move that lets you bounce off enemies and projectiles alike, chaining jumps and attacks in a fluid display of ninja acrobatics.
Combat is swift and stylish—most enemies fall in a single blow, whether it’s Kenji’s blade or Kumori’s kunai doing the damage. Layered onto this is the Hypercharge system, where defeating color-coded enemies with the right type of attack (melee or ranged) builds up a powerful one-hit kill charge. It’s a mechanic that rewards precision and decision-making in the heat of battle.
Players can upgrade both characters and tackle a wide range of content, from standard stages and bosses to optional “Special Ops” and demon altar missions that test the limits of your reflexes and planning. The pixel art style, retro-inspired soundtrack, and inventive level design all contribute to a stylish, modern action experience.
While Ragebound may not reach the brutal extremes of earlier Ninja Gaiden games, it fights to remain a worthy evolution of the series—and a triumphant return to ninja mayhem.
