Olivia Rodrigo is turning up the volume—and the timing couldn’t be better.
The Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum artist has released “serena joy” worldwide, following the song’s exclusive physical debut last Friday at Analog Records in Orange County, California. Now available globally, the track arrives just days before Rodrigo’s sold-out Daisy Chain Fields festival on August 29 at Great Park in Irvine.
Written with longtime collaborator Dan Nigro during sessions for Rodrigo’s third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, “serena joy” channels Rodrigo’s punk side with an angsty, urgent sound and unmistakable protest energy.
The song is also closely tied to the spirit of Daisy Chain Fields, which brings together an all-women lineup of artists, nonprofit organizations and a community supporting women and girls. A portion of net proceeds from “serena joy” will benefit the Daisy Chain Fields Fund.
Its Orange County debut was a fitting nod to the local community and to Rodrigo’s ongoing support of independent record stores. The release also follows a major midnight celebration for you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, when nearly 200 independent record stores across the country took part in release events.
Now, fans everywhere can hear “serena joy”—and they won’t have to wait long to hear it live. Rodrigo will perform the song for the first time onstage at Daisy Chain Fields on Saturday, August 29.
