Saycouth follows up their singles “Magic” and “Phantom Love” with the latest soul-inflected single “It’s the Ride” and another fever dream video courtesy of Carey Ott, working under the “Freaks of Nashville” banner.
The throwback vibe of the single, which filters 70’s soul music through a 90’s ‘Neo-Soul’/Indie aesthetic, is perfectly paired with the lyric video that Ott has created: archival VHS/Super 8 footage of BMX bandits, skate punks, dirt bike daredevils and surfers navigating ramps, traffic, waves, and other obstacles is “the ride” that defines the freedom of summer and the carefree days of youth.
The song’s laid-back groove is complemented by footage that is sometimes slowed-down and sometimes sped up; crafty editing that services the music but somehow seems distant like a faded memory or fever dream.
Vocalist Mikayla Debasio delivers lines including “Trust the ride, the vision, the high” and while she is telling the story of a musician or band striving to achieve success without succumbing to the pressures and pitfalls of the music industry, the video manages to capture the youthful ease of navigating physical obstacles on decks, bikes and boards. It is, after all, the ride and not the destination that counts.
Saycouth will be performing “It’s the Ride,” some earlier singles, and tracks from their EP Full Moon Night in Sheffield at Living Waters Brewing, 1056 E Trinity Lane in Nashville on Wednesday, Oct 15 at 7PM CST as noted at https://do615.com/events/2025/10/15/soul-night-feat-saycouth-w-kenny-sharp-tickets
