Austin-based band Slumbering Sun just dropped a new single that’s a fantastic blend of Neil Young’s “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)” and Black Sabbath’s “Into the Void”. It’s a mix that turns into a dramatic and epic track with a doomy vibe.

Catch Slumbering Sun live at a couple of SXSW gigs happening this week. Check out the dates and details further down. And come May, they’re hitting the road for a regional tour alongside Demons My Friends from Mexico City.

Slumbering Sun is this fresh melodic doom project, formed by members from the well-known underground groups Destroyer of Light and Monte Luna. They’re pushing the boundaries with their music, blending broader melodies and sounds, drawing inspiration from Celtic folk to doom metal, and even throwing in some classic 90s vibes reminiscent of Soundgarden and Alice In Chains.

After their last band split up, James Clarke and Keegan Kjeldsen decided to channel their energy into something new, to move past the disappointment of an album that never saw the light of day. They kicked off this new venture with an album Keegan had been tinkering with alongside other projects. It all started one warm spring afternoon in Austin, with some acoustic jamming at their rehearsal space. James began crafting melodies, they wrapped up the lyrics together, and their new project began to take shape.

They brought together a bunch of their pals from the Texas metal community, all of whom they’ve shared countless stages with over the years. Kelsey Wilson from Temptress hopped on as the lead guitarist, regularly making the trek from Dallas. Garth Condit and Penny Turner, who each played in bands with James and Keegan, rounded out the rhythm section. And that’s how Slumbering Sun came to be. During a scorching week in the summer of 2022, they laid down their tracks for The Ever-Living Fire, an album born from extensive rehearsals and fine-tuning. With plenty of touring experience under their belts, they’re gearing up to hit the road soon.

You can grab their album The Ever-Living Fire on LP, CD, cassette, or digital, which was released on February 24th, 2023.
