Netflix’s summer slate just got a major adrenaline boost with Hostage, an edge-of-your-seat political thriller starring Suranne Jones as the British Prime Minister. Streaming from August 21, the high-stakes series pits her against Julie Delpy as the French President, as both leaders are thrust into chaos when a diplomatic state visit turns into a nightmare.

Written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Matt Charman (Bridge of SpiesTreason), Hostage is more than just politics—it’s personal. When the Prime Minister’s husband is kidnapped and the French president is blackmailed, what begins as a tense international summit becomes a brutal test of leadership, loyalty, and resolve.

Jones, also serving as executive producer, delivers a powerhouse performance as a leader navigating impossible choices under the harshest spotlight imaginable. “It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” she says. “Hostage was perfect—me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.”

Charman is equally excited: “An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family—she’s fierce, ruthless, and you can’t take your eyes off her.”

With a gripping blend of political maneuvering and emotional stakes, Hostage brings international suspense to the small screen with cinematic scale. As secrets unravel and alliances are tested, the question becomes not just who can be trusted—but who will survive.

The cast is equally impressive, featuring Julie Delpy, Corey Mylchreest, Lucian Msamati, Ashley Thomas, James Cosmo, Martin McCann, and Jehnny Beth.

Don’t miss Hostage when it premieres August 21—only on Netflix.
