Fans of The Alters have a big reason to return. The newly unveiled Last Variable gameplay trailer offers a first look at the game’s ambitious 20-hour story expansion, arriving on July 13, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
This time, players step into the role of Jan Scientist, creating four brand-new Alters—Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, and Physicist—each bringing unique skills to the fight for survival. Together, they’ll venture into the mysterious Oasis, terraform hostile environments, unlock advanced technologies, and tackle increasingly dangerous planetary threats.
The expansion also introduces fresh gameplay systems, including underground facilities, Field Labs, Cryosleep Chambers, deeper research mechanics, and tougher survival challenges such as earthquakes and radiation storms. As resources grow scarce, players will have to balance scientific progress with the competing ambitions of their specialized Alters.
Already recognized with a DICE Award for Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year and a BAFTA nomination for Best Narrative, The Alters is raising the stakes with what looks to be its biggest and most ambitious expansion yet.
