Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids has unveiled “The Dishonesty,” the second single from his forthcoming solo album The Salton Sea, out November 14th via Nightshoes Syndicate/Big Scary Monsters. Accompanied by a video directed by Josh Berwanger (The Anniversary), the track captures the raw turmoil of addiction and the pain of hurting loved ones in its wake. “This is a song about lying and hurting the people you love when you’re in the throes of addiction,” Pryor explains. “I think Josh really captured the insanity of how that feels.”
Following the acclaimed title track, praised by Alternative Press, Stereogum, and Brooklyn Vegan, The Salton Sea finds Pryor embracing an expansive, full-band sound with help from producer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol). Across ten songs, Pryor channels the grit and melody of The Afghan Whigs and Bob Mould’s Sugar, blending dreamy guitars with cinematic production.
The album’s title mirrors its emotional landscape. Once a thriving resort, California’s Salton Sea is now a toxic wasteland—an apt metaphor for Pryor’s battle with addiction. “The story these songs tell is about that time in my life,” he says. “How I lost myself, hurt people I care about, and came out the other side only to realize I’m still a work in progress.”
