Third Man Records has unleashed a long-awaited beast: That Girl – Live Recordings 1986–1994, the first-ever live anthology from Ann Arbor noise-rock titans Laughing Hyenas. Spanning eight ferocious years, the collection gathers 18 blistering performances rescued from founding member John Brannon’s personal cassette archive and restored by GRAMMY®-winning producer Bobby Emmett (Sturgill Simpson, Jack White).
The result is a raw document of a band that lived for the stage. From the savage swing of Jim Kimball’s drums to Kevin Strickland’s hypnotic bass lines, the recordings frame the late Larissa Strickland’s jagged guitar and Brannon’sdemonic howl in their most unfiltered form. A standout is “Here We Go Again,” captured during a legendary WNYU Radio session in 1990 and premiering today on all streaming platforms.
Rooted in Detroit’s Cass Corridor punk scene and inspired by the Stooges, The Birthday Party, and early blues and jazz, Laughing Hyenas forged a sound that was as brutal as it was hypnotic. As Wolf Eyes’ Aaron Dilloway once said, “The Laughing Hyenas were the scariest band I have ever seen.”
That Girl – Live Recordings 1986–1994 arrives February 20 via Third Man Records, digitally and on 2xLP colored vinyl with a limited-edition 7”—a long-overdue tribute to a band whose true legacy roared loudest on stage.
