Following the release of his latest album, Yeek returns to announce “Future Reference: Live” – two album-release shows in New York and LA in November. Along with the announcement, he is also unveiling more of the inspirations that went into the album in a never-before-seen sit-down interview with Matthew Baus. In this 6-minute clip, the two unpack Yeek’s work outside his own music and creative direction with other artists and his growing status as a multi-disciplinary artist.
Future Reference functions as an all-encompassing thread between the various subcultures and communities that have informed his discography over the course of his career. Described as a “beautiful, forward-thinking pop opus” by FLOOD, the album adopts many different sounds, bouncing from a jersey-club beat, to classic 90s R&B tinged earworms, and the fuzzy alternative jams that marked his rise to prominence with his breakout project Sebastian.
Future Reference is a simultaneously referential and forward-thinking body of work, drawing on both Yeek’s past experiences and his musical aspirations to capture every facet of him as a musician. Organically built to exist in conversation with his past work, he’s cultivated an intimate album that’s centered on core memories and communities, with a small collection of close friends doubling as collaborators, like Raveena, Bakar, Jordan Waré, and Erik Bodin of Little Dragon.
