Austin, TX, has long been a haven for sonic mavericks, and the latest act to crash the party is Heavy Velvet. The band’s forthcoming debut EP promises a heady dose of unfiltered rock and roll, pulling inspiration from legendary forebears like Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Wolfmother while forging a fiery, blues-soaked sound all their own.
Heavy Velvet leans hard into the alchemy of grunge, psych, and blues. Their heavy, unrelenting riffs serve as the perfect stage for vocalist Erika Leigh’s sultry, razor-sharp delivery. Her voice drips with raw emotion, veering between soulful and searing, making every track feel like a live-wire experience.
The band’s ethos? Bring the past roaring into the present. Heavy Velvet isn’t interested in mimicry—they channel the spirit of the classics but blaze their own trail with high-octane energy and performances that hit like a lightning bolt.
It all started with ex-Slow Season (RidingEasy Records) guitarist David Kent, whose move to Austin marked the beginning of Heavy Velvet. Kent, no stranger to blistering rock riffs, joined forces with Leigh to create a sound steeped in the golden era of 60s and 70s hard rock with a gritty splash of 90s grunge attitude. Together, they crafted a smoldering rhythm section that brings their vision to life.
