Shearwater have saved their biggest surprise for last.

The band’s new single “You And Your Dog” arrives as the closing track of their highly anticipated album The New World — and just when you think you know where the song is heading, everything shifts. After 90 hypnotic seconds of cascading piano and drifting clarinet, a voice emerges: intimate, unmistakable, and completely unexpected.

It isn’t Shearwater frontman Jonathan Meiburg. It’s art-pop legend Laurie Anderson.

Anderson appears like a voice from another dimension, delivering a haunting story in her signature style — one that feels separate from the album’s world at first, but ultimately reveals itself as a key piece of the bigger picture. “Laurie’s been a friend and hero of ours for a long time,” Meiburg says, explaining that he imagined the story in her voice from the moment he wrote it.

The accompanying lyric video, filmed by Meiburg in Chile, matches the song’s dreamlike atmosphere: a shadowy, cinematic journey through memory, uncertainty, and strange emotional landscapes.

By the time “You And Your Dog” fades out, one thing becomes clear: you’ll probably want to return to the beginning of The New World immediately.

The new album marks another bold step for Shearwater, whose 25-year career has been defined by restless creativity and adventurous songwriting. Featuring a wide-ranging group of collaborators, including instrumentalists from around the world, The New World expands the band’s sound into something both intimate and expansive.

The release also sets the stage for Shearwater’s long-awaited return to the road. This fall, the band will join forces with Loma for the co-headlining “When Can I See You?” European tour — their first time touring together and Shearwater’s first full public performances in nearly a decade.
