Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart gets the spotlight in Kordell Stewart / Slash & Burn, a new HBO Original documentary short premiering Tuesday, October 27, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.
Known as “Slash” for his ability to make plays at multiple positions, Stewart was one of the NFL’s most electrifying players of the 1990s. His versatility helped challenge traditional ideas about what a quarterback could do. But as his profile grew, a malicious rumor threatened to overshadow his accomplishments on the field.
Directed by Brian Rivera (WWE: Unreal), the documentary looks back at Stewart’s career and examines the lasting personal impact of a story that followed him for decades. Candid interviews with Stewart and those who witnessed his journey explore the pressures of fame, public scrutiny, and the search for truth beyond the game.
The film features appearances from former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, running back Jerome Bettis, assistant coach Mike Mularkey, Pittsburgh broadcaster Bob Pompeani, and journalist LZ Granderson.
Slash & Burn is the latest entry in HBO and NFL Films’ NFL Shorts series, which tells compelling stories from the world of football. Previous installments include the Sports Emmy-nominated The Shuffle, about the iconic 1985 Chicago Bears rap anthem, and Miller Night Football, chronicling comedian Dennis Miller’s time in the Monday Night Football broadcast booth.
For football fans, Stewart’s story offers a look back at a memorable era of the NFL—and a reminder that an athlete’s life can be shaped by far more than what happens between the lines.
