We knew him as Chandler Bing. But there was so much more to Matthew Perry.

Netflix’s The One About Matthew Perry, a three-part documentary series premiering Tuesday, October 27, takes viewers beyond the wisecracks and sitcom fame to explore the man behind one of television’s most beloved characters.

Using previously unreleased photos and videos from Perry’s family archive, the series traces his journey from aspiring comic actor to global star, while confronting his struggles with addiction, his friendships, and his determination to help others.

Director Mary Robertson wants to shift the focus from the circumstances of Perry’s death to the life he lived. That doesn’t mean shying away from the painful parts. Recovery, addiction, and the toll on those closest to him are central to the story.

One of its most personal voices is Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, who shares intimate memories and reflects on her brother through the dual lens of family and her work as a psychotherapist. Friends David Pressman and Roger Castillo, actor Kevin Pollak, and former NBC president Warren Littlefield also feature.

Don’t expect a Friends reunion. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer did not take part in new interviews. Robertson has respected their decision, acknowledging that grief looks different for everyone.

The result is a more intimate portrait, rooted in family, friendship, laughter, and loss.

Arriving just one day before the third anniversary of Perry’s death on October 28, 2023, the series has a poignant purpose: to remember a man who was more than Chandler Bing, and more than his struggles with addiction.

When to watch: The series premieres Tuesday, October 27, on Netflix.
