The New York Videogame Critics Circle (NYVGCC) has revealed that Sam Lake, the creative mastermind behind Remedy Entertainment’s most iconic games, will receive the prestigious Andrew Yoon Legend Award at the 14th Annual New York Game Awards. Set to take place on January 21, 2025, at Manhattan’s SVA Theatre, the ceremony will honor Lake’s enduring legacy in video game storytelling and design.

A Visionary Career in Gaming

From Max Payne’s gritty noir storytelling in 2001 to the mind-bending brilliance of Alan Wake 2 in 2023, Lake’s contributions have cemented his reputation as one of the industry’s most innovative storytellers. Over two decades at Remedy Entertainment, he’s built narrative-driven games that captivate players with their distinctive worlds, compelling characters, and groundbreaking design. His creative fingerprint is unmistakable—if you’ve played a Remedy game, you’ve felt his influence.

“What an honor it is to celebrate someone of Sam Lake’s caliber during the 14th annual New York Game Awards,” said Harold Goldberg, NYVGCC president and co-founder. “You know a Remedy game when you see it, largely due to Sam Lake’s impact on the worlds he creates. His 20-year career at Remedy has inspired so many of our members and interns, and we’re thrilled to add him to the roster of esteemed game changers recognized with the Andrew Yoon Legend Award.”

Celebrating an Architect of Universes

Lake’s ability to build interconnected universes hasn’t gone unnoticed. Remedy’s latest triumph, Alan Wake 2, not only thrilled fans but also brought together threads from past Remedy titles, creating a shared universe that feels as innovative as it is ambitious. “It’s rare to see a studio deliver a stellar sequel a decade after its predecessor—and rarer still to watch it resonate with fans and evolve into a universe,” said Ryan O’Callaghan, NYVGCC executive director. “Sam Lake’s dedication to crafting meaningful, imaginative games has set a gold standard for narrative-driven design.”

In addition to his creative work, Lake recently shared insights with NYVGCC students and interns, offering a glimpse into the care and inspiration behind his storytelling—a moment that left a lasting impression on the next generation of creators.

A Legacy of Innovation

The Andrew Yoon Legend Award honors individuals and organizations whose body of work reflects artistic achievement and innovation. Named after NYVGCC founding member Andrew Yoon, past recipients include Neil Druckmann, Reggie Fils-Aimé, Hideo Kojima, and Jade Raymond, among other industry luminaries. Sam Lake joins this elite group as a testament to his enduring impact on gaming.

Mark your calendars for January 21, 2025, when the New York Game Awards will celebrate Lake’s legacy alongside the year’s best in gaming. For fans of narrative-driven adventures, this is one awards show you won’t want to miss.
