This summer, Apple TV+ turns up the heat with its latest original drama, Smoke, premiering globally on Friday, June 27, 2025. The nine-episode limited series—created, written, and executive produced by acclaimed novelist Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island)—dives into the dark, smoldering world of serial arson through a gritty lens of crime, trauma, and truth.
Inspired by true events, Smoke follows two complex investigators drawn together by a string of mysterious fires and mounting bodies. Taron Egerton (Rocketman, Black Bird) stars as Dave Gudsen, a haunted and fiercely dedicated arson investigator. Across from him is Emmy nominee Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country), portraying Michelle Calderone, a sharp and driven detective with her own demons to wrestle. Together, they form an unlikely partnership, united by a common mission: to catch the fire-starters before everything—and everyone—goes up in flames.
Lehane brings his signature blend of character-driven storytelling and suspenseful realism to Smoke, crafting a tense and layered mystery that explores not just who lit the match, but why. The show doesn’t shy away from moral ambiguity, personal trauma, and the toll of obsession, promising a cerebral and emotionally charged viewing experience.

The cast is stacked with talent. In addition to Egerton and Smollett, Smoke features Rafe Spall, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Hannah Emily Anderson, Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky, Adina Porter, Academy Award and Emmy nominee Greg Kinnear, and Emmy winner John Leguizamo. The series also includes an original song by Thom Yorke, lending an eerie sonic undercurrent to the already intense atmosphere.
The first two episodes of Smoke will drop on June 27, followed by new episodes released weekly every Friday through August 8, 2025. With its mix of high-caliber performances, a noir-infused aesthetic, and a script rooted in real-world psychological complexity, Smoke is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about thrillers of the year.
Whether you’re a fan of procedural dramas, psychological thrillers, or simply great storytelling, Smoke offers a slow-burn mystery that promises to leave a lasting mark. Egerton and Smollett lead with chemistry and depth, making their characters’ descent into the blaze of truth as riveting as it is harrowing.
