A legendary horror board game is coming back—and surviving Arkham is no walk in the park.

Fantasy Flight Games is bringing back Arkham Horror Second Edition as Arkham Horror Remastered – Vault Series. Featuring refreshed artwork, upgraded visual design, and a rewritten rulebook, this new edition preserves the chaotic, monster-filled adventure that made the original a tabletop favorite.

The crowdfunding campaign launches October 21 on Gamefound. Here’s why horror fans and board game collectors should pay attention.

Welcome to Arkham. Things Are Already Going Wrong.

Set in 1926, Arkham, Massachusetts, is crawling with supernatural threats. Dimensional gates are opening across the city, strange creatures are roaming the streets, and something far worse may be waiting beyond our reality.

Players take on the roles of investigators, each with unique abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Your mission? Work together to close the gates, gather clues, fight monsters, and prevent an ancient cosmic entity known as an Ancient One from awakening.

Easy enough, right? Not quite.

How Gameplay Works

Choose Your Investigator

Every investigation begins with choosing a character. The core game includes 16 investigators, each offering a different approach to the nightmare.

Some characters are better suited to fighting monsters. Others excel at researching mysteries, gathering clues, or helping teammates survive. Your investigator has two important resources to manage: stamina and sanity.

Lose all your stamina, and physical injury takes you out of action. Lose all your sanity, and the horrors become too much to bear. Lose both, and your investigator is devoured—meaning you’ll need to bring a new character into the game.

Explore the City

Arkham is a sprawling board filled with locations to investigate. Players move between neighborhoods searching for clues, collecting useful equipment, encountering strange characters, and discovering supernatural dangers.

But there’s a catch: the city changes as you explore. New gates open, monsters move, and unexpected events can derail even the best-laid plans.

Fight—or Run for Your Life

Not every monster needs to be fought. Depending on your investigator’s abilities, you might try to sneak past a creature rather than risk a dangerous confrontation.

If you do fight, combat involves skill checks and dice rolls. You may need to overcome your fear before you can even attack. Winning a battle can clear your path, but taking too many hits can leave your investigator unconscious or worse.

Sometimes courage is necessary. Sometimes discretion is the better part of survival.

Close the Gates Before It’s Too Late

Closing dimensional gates is central to victory. Investigators must explore otherworldly locations and return to Arkham before they can shut the portals behind them.

Clues collected throughout the city can also be spent to seal closed gates permanently, preventing them from reopening. The team wins by closing every open gate or sealing at least six gates.

Meanwhile, the Mythos deck keeps the pressure on. Each round can bring fresh gates, new clues, moving monsters, and unpredictable events. Even a quiet turn can be followed by a catastrophic one.

And if the Ancient One awakens? The investigators face one final battle against a force that may be far beyond their capabilities.

Arkham Horror Remastered

What’s New in the Remastered Edition?

This isn’t a complete redesign. The remaster keeps the classic Second Edition gameplay while giving the experience a fresh presentation.

  • New artwork: Updated illustrations throughout the game.
  • Refreshed components: Cleaner graphics and easier-to-read information.
  • A revised rulebook: Improved wording and organization for a smoother learning experience.
  • Quality-of-life improvements: Visual reminders help players keep track of recurring effects.

The result aims to make a classic game more approachable without losing the unpredictable adventure longtime fans remember.

The campaign launches October 21, 2026, at 3 p.m. Eastern on Gamefound.
