Emergence Day wasn’t just the beginning of a war. It was the day everything changed.

The new launch trailer for Gears of War: E-Day takes a surprisingly somber approach to the series’ legendary first encounter with the Locust Horde. Instead of leaning into explosions and nonstop gunfire, the trailer focuses on something much more unsettling: fear, loss, and ordinary people caught in a catastrophe they don’t understand.

Gears of War: E-Day

Set in the city of Kalona, the trailer follows civilians hiding in an underground subway station as the Locust invasion unfolds above them. A musician quietly plays an upright bass while families wait in fear.

Meanwhile, young Marcus Fenix and Dominic “Dom” Santiago are fighting to protect them.

But there is only so much two soldiers can do.

An enormous E-Hole tears open beneath the city, sending the subway station collapsing into the chaos. From the destruction emerges a massive, spider-like Corpser. Marcus and Dom can only watch as the place they were trying to defend is destroyed.

It’s bleak. And deliberately so.

A Different Kind of Gears Trailer

The trailer’s emotional punch comes from its music. Rather than the usual wall of combat noise, it uses a haunting arrangement of Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” arranged for the game by composer Adam Lastiwka.

The approach immediately recalls the iconic “Mad World” trailer for the original Gears of War. Once again, the series is using beautiful, melancholy music to remind us that beneath all the guns and monsters is a story about people experiencing something horrifying.

That perspective is important because E-Day takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War. Marcus and Dom aren’t the hardened veterans players already know. They’re younger soldiers facing an enemy humanity has never seen before.

And neither they nor anyone else knows what is coming.

The Day the World Changed

The trailer makes it clear that E-Day isn’t simply revisiting the Locust invasion for another round of action. It’s showing the disaster from the ground level.

Families are hiding. Cities are collapsing. Soldiers are overwhelmed. And humanity is learning, in real time, that something has risen from beneath the planet.

For Marcus and Dom, Emergence Day is the beginning of a war.

For everyone else, it’s the day their world ended.

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Xbox Game Pass. Premium Edition owners can start playing October 1.

If the launch trailer is any indication, E-Day is going back to the roots of Gears—but this time, we’re going to see what the beginning of the nightmare actually looked like.
