Kino Lorber is bringing Mimic to 4K Blu-ray on January 13, giving Guillermo del Toro’s early sci-fi horror film a well-deserved upgrade. For longtime fans and collectors, this looks like the most complete and polished home release the film has received.

The story centers on Susan Tyler, a scientist who creates genetically engineered “Judas” insects to stop a deadly, cockroach-borne disease in New York City. The plan works—at first. But as expected in a del Toro film, things don’t stay under control for long. The insects evolve, adapt, and eventually begin mimicking humans, turning the situation into a tense and unsettling nightmare.

This edition spreads the content across three discs, and it’s clear a lot of care went into it. Both the director’s cut and theatrical cut have been newly restored in 4K and approved by del Toro himself, with Dolby Vision/HDR enhancing the film’s dark, atmospheric look. There are also multiple commentary tracks, including insights from del Toro and film experts.

The Blu-ray disc adds even more value with featurettes, deleted scenes, storyboards, and a brief video introduction from the director. Altogether, this release feels thoughtfully assembled.
