Marvel is stepping back into the fighting game spotlight, and this time it’s bringing the anime-fighter experts with it. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, developed by Arc System Works and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in partnership with Marvel Games, launches August 6, 2026 for PS5 and PC with full cross-play.

Instead of the familiar 2v2 or 3v3 formula, Tōkon introduces a fresh 4v4 tag system. Players start with two available fighters before unlocking the rest of their team mid-match by dealing damage and triggering dramatic Wall Breaks that shift the battle across multiple arenas. It’s a clever twist that promises more strategy without the chaos of constant character swapping.

The game also packs a surprisingly ambitious story. Earth’s fate rests on a tournament hosted by the cosmic Champion of the Universe, forcing teams of heroes and villains to fight for survival in a roughly 10-hour campaign filled with playable battles rather than endless cutscenes.

At launch, players can choose from a 20-character roster featuring Marvel icons like Captain America, Hulk, Black Panther, Storm, Doctor Doom, Star-Lord, and Ms. Marvel, with more fighters already planned as DLC. Offline Arcade and local versus modes join ranked online play, rollback netcode, and massive 64-player social lobbies.

Visually, Tōkon looks every bit like an Arc System Works production, blending bold anime-inspired visuals with Marvel’s iconic heroes and villains. Running on Unreal Engine 5 and targeting 4K at 60 FPS on PS5, it could become the new benchmark for comic book fighting games.

After years of waiting for a fresh Marvel fighter, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is shaping up to be more than a spiritual successor to Marvel vs. Capcom—it could be the franchise’s next evolution.
